Daylight saving time is the practice where clocks are moved an hour forward in the spring and again an hour back during winter. The idea of daylight saving time is to have more daylight during summer as well as to save energy. Although, this practice has its own benefits, not everybody is convinced about the benefits especially in the modern world. Over the daylight savings time history, many things have changed.
Initially, the idea of daylight saving time was to utilize more daylight in the evening which would result in saving energy bills. However, the argument doesn’t seem to work anymore. As a matter of fact, many people are growing tired of this practice. As a result, it has prompted the end daylight savings time petition.
The DST practice doesn’t seem any better anymore like it was initially. Today, the numerous shortcomings of daylight saving time has raised the petition to End Daylight Saving Time. The following reasons make the argument to end DST valid.
1. Does not save energy anymore.
Initially, the purpose of daylight saving was to reduce energy costs. This is because going an hour forward during spring adds an extra one hour of daylight. As a result, people can still engage in their businesses for a longer period of their evening to utilize the extra hour of daylight. This result is less use of artificial light which in turn saves energy bills.
Today, however, there is minimal or negligible energy saved as a result of this DST practice. This is because there are computers, air conditioning units and TV screens that use even more energy. Instead, these devices tend to increase energy costs. Because there is not much saving on energy cost, more people are advocating End Daylight Saving Time.
2. DST can make people sick.
By changing time even by a single hour disrupts the circadian rhythm or body clock. The resulting tiredness is usually an inconvenience for many people. For some people, this change in time may have serious consequences. Some studies have also shown that lacking enough sleep at the beginning of DST have resulted in workplace injuries, miscarriages, and car accidents. Also, the early evening darkness after the daylight saving time has been found to increase the risk of depression. Also, there is a higher risk of heart attack at the start of DST.
A decrease in productivity after the transition of daylight saving impact on the economy negatively. Therefore, the various shortcomings of DST have raised concerns whether the practice should continue. However, this has raised the petition to get rid of daylight saving time.
